Marie

I sit in a folding chair by the window. Taking a break from writing, or rather, from not writing. Still nothing. Still drawing blanks. Fortunately, no one will read it one way or the other, I tell myself.

I hold a fuzzy stuffed lambchop on my lap. What’s left of the toy, anyway, squeaker now extracted. Threads shredded and one eye gone. Jackie’s favorite. I pet it mindlessly as tears roll down my face.

When you feel her, welcome her. Dottie had said. But I don’t feel her now. Just emptiness.

I’m sorry. Some rescue this was. I’m sorry… I tell her over and over.

That’s when I heard it.
